The Stated Problem
"We need a rebrand. We want a financial planning firm that professional women can trust, a place where they feel heard and understood." No unified answer to "what are we naming."
What We Found
The firm had four decision-makers and four different businesses in their heads. The surface request was "we need a new name and identity." The actual problem was internal misalignment around a fundamental strategic pivot — they were trying to move from a generalist RIA (young-to-mid career professionals with equity comp) to a women- focused wealth firm, but not everyone had made that leap yet. You can't brand a firm that hasn't decided what it is.
The Decision
Commit to the women-focused positioning hard enough to actually exclude people — and refuse to soften it into "women and families" or "couples where women lead." The temptation throughout this project was to hedge: keep the door open for male clients, serve "households," not alienate couples. The call was to not do that. The name Tessara, the visual system, the plum palette, the mosaic mark — none of it reads neutral. That's the point. What we didn't build: a gender-neutral brand that could have served everyone and differentiated no one. What we chose not to do: name it something that sounds like every other RIA (initials, founder names, geographic references like "Ballast Point").
What We Built
A name that has no legacy baggage and signals nothing about its origin firm — so the repositioning is clean, not an apology for what came before. A mark that encodes both structural precision and warmth simultaneously (the geometric mosaic), so the brand doesn't have to choose between expert and approachable. A color system that is unmistakably feminine without being condescending — deep plum instead of blush and gold, which would have read like a spa brand. A positioning document that gives the firm permission to turn away clients who aren't the right fit, which is what actually makes referrals more precise.
